Harsco Global Empowers Journalists with Open Data Training in Owerri

March 10, 2025 otowngist Comments Off on Harsco Global Empowers Journalists with Open Data Training in Owerri

Journalists and media professionals in Imo State received hands-on training in open data reporting as Harsco Global, in collaboration with its partners Open Knowledge Foundation (OKFN) and DATAOPIAN, hosted an intensive workshop in Owerri. The training, which focused on leveraging open data for climate and agricultural reporting, was part of Open Data Day 2025, a global initiative promoting transparency, accountability, and data-driven journalism.

The workshop featured seasoned experts, including open data analyst Chinedu Hardy Nwadike, who guided participants on how to source, interpret, and use open data to craft compelling and impactful stories. Research and data specialist Udochukwu Chukwu provided insights on how journalists can hold authorities accountable using environmental and agricultural data.

Another key highlight was a session on digital branding for media professionals, led by Adanna Ononiwu, founder of Inspiration for Technology. She emphasized the importance of personal branding, encouraging journalists to establish strong digital identities to boost credibility and career growth.

Held at the OtownGist Creative Hub training hall, the venue provided a conducive space for participants to engage in practical exercises, collaborative learning, and expert mentorship.

Speaking on the initiative, Harriet Ijeomah, founder of Harsco Global, reaffirmed her organization’s commitment to bridging the gap between media professionals and the tools needed for impactful storytelling.

“Data-driven journalism is the future. Our goal is to ensure that Nigerian journalists are equipped with the knowledge and resources to leverage open data for investigative reporting, policy analysis, and community engagement,” she stated.

By equipping journalists with essential data literacy skills, the workshop sets the stage for more transparent and insightful media coverage in Nigeria, particularly in areas affecting climate action, agriculture, and public policy.
