IMSU Journalism and Media Studies Students Undergo Hands-On Training at OtownGist
Students from the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Imo State University, have participated in an intensive, hands-on media training program hosted by OtownGist Media & Creative Hub, reinforcing the hub’s growing reputation as a leading centre for digital media training in Owerri and Imo State.
The program, organized in partnership with Harsco Global, was designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world media practice by immersing students in a live production environment.
Throughout the training, participants engaged in key areas of modern journalism, including story development, broadcast writing, studio presentation, video production, and digital publishing. The hands-on approach exposed them to the realities of newsroom operations and content creation workflows.

Industry professionals, including Chidera Ujah, led specialized sessions in broadcast writing, while Chinedu Hardy Nwadike provided mentorship on digital storytelling, audience engagement, and the evolving media landscape.
A major highlight of the program was its focus on AI-assisted journalism, equipping students with practical knowledge of how emerging technologies are transforming news production and distribution.
As part of their practical assessment, the students were grouped to produce impact-driven video stories, applying their skills to real societal issues while developing teamwork and production competence.

The initiative reflects a growing shift toward experiential learning in media education, where students are equipped not only with theoretical knowledge but also with practical skills relevant to today’s digital-first industry.
With this program, OtownGist Media & Creative Hub continues to position itself as a key hub for media innovation, training, and talent development in Owerri and across Imo State, preparing the next generation of journalists for the demands of modern media.
