Side-Changers & Ex-Recyclers: The Unspoken Rules of Modern Friendship Loyalty

June 3, 2026 otowngist Comments Off on Side-Changers & Ex-Recyclers: The Unspoken Rules of Modern Friendship Loyalty

In the age of situationships and complex dating dynamics, where do friendship boundaries actually begin and end? The latest roundtable on Real Gist by OtownGist (Episode 15) didn’t just scratch the surface of this question—it completely blew the doors off the discussion.

Hosted by Christabel, Merit, and Jessica, the episode served as a case study on how different people define loyalty within their inner circles.

The Maturity Argument vs. The ‘Off-Limits’ Code
On one hand, we have the school of thought championed by Merit, which argues that holding onto grudges after a relationship ends is childish. If two people you love match well together, why stand in the way?

On the other hand lies the strict code of the street: No recycling. The general consensus among the community is that sharing the same taste with a best friend is a red flag from the start. Once a partner is out of the picture, they become completely off-limits to the inner circle. To cross that line isn’t “maturity”—it’s a direct breach of the friendship contract.

The Myth of Neutrality
Perhaps the most profound takeaway from the episode came via a feedback message from a viewer named Kalu, who stated: “She should take a side and stay there.”

In modern friendships, trying to play neutral when your friend is hurting is often viewed as a passive form of betrayal. When a breakup gets messy, your circle is expected to draw a line in the sand. Sitting on the fence doesn’t make you a peacemaker; it makes you unreliable.

The Verdict
Relationships may come and go, but structural boundaries are what keep friendships alive. If your best friend cannot choose your peace of mind over a relationship with your ex, it might be time to evaluate who is really sitting at your table.

Where do you draw the line? Can you stay neutral, or do you expect absolute loyalty from your friends?
